Happy Christmas, and Thank You!...

As my first year of diarmydotnet draws to a close, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a great big thank you to you all who supported DDN this year. I hope next year is a big success for all of you and that all your dreams may come true! Nollaig Shona! diarmy

The Widget has Arrived!...

I’ve been busy this morning! I’ve created a Mac OS X 10.4+ Widget for the Dashboard application. It automatically downloads the latest ten blog titles from my site and displays them in the lovely widget box (as displayed) allowing you to select one or more to read further by clicking on them. The following information is from Apple: Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is required. If you’re using Safari, click the download...

A Quiet Christmas Season...

In the 19 or so years I can remember things, I’ve never seen Daingean Uí Chúis so eerily quiet. Last weekend, I frequented what could be termed my local, MacCarthy’s pub in Goat Street in the town (Visit Website). Usually the scene of frivious banter and customary cats, the pub was silent, save for the locals and tourists who sit quietly in the bar area. I sat to the rear, beside the cat. This was 10 o’clock....

Microsoft Ends IE Support for Mac...

Microsoft announced this week that it will be ceasing support for the Internet Explorer offering it has for the Macintosh platform with effect from 31/12/2005 and ceasing distribution from 31/01/2006. Many Mac users will obviously not be surprised considering MS announced plans to shelve the MacIE browser over 2 years ago. Even today, you can download IE for Mac from www.mactopia.com and get absolutely the worst build...

Christmas Morning (Poem)...

I wrote this yesterday while musing the onset of Christmas and the flicker of the annoyingly cheap lights on the lovely tree to my right: “Christmas Morning” by: Diarmaid Ó Conchubhair “The Morning skies rushed through the autumnal curtains, Fire and fervour filled the chill-ed rooms Cheer and Joy, though subdued, was there Festivities and Christmas-ness abound.” “Present in the presence of presents Happy...

Exams Exodus (Part 1)...

Well, it’s finally caught up with me – time. Not only that but it has since passed me out, and it wasn’t until I was reminded in the wee small hours of the morning, that I needed to ‘blog’ about the turning times. For over 4 years now, I’ve been partly resident in Galway City, spending the odd few months in different places. In all, over the last 6 years, I’ve not lived anywhere...

Dolphin Delight...

A good friend of mine asked me to ‘blog’ about dolphins. What does someone write about one of the world’s most intelligent creatures? A beautiful soothing creature with elegance, grace and poise. Dolphins have perplexed the masses for generations with their gravity defying acrobatics and their unending playfullness when compared to other sea creatures. Dolphins are in fact mammals and there are hundreds...

Leave the kids at home!...

When I started diarmydotnet I made a promise to myself to not turn into a film critic. While I’m still battling with my urges to release the steam of praise to directors and actors alike, I feel in this instance that it’s a matter of importance that I share some of my feelings about one particular film. Last night, for what seems like well over a year, I went to the cinema here in Galway. Tatty and all as...

Is Outsourcing Everything a Good Idea?...

Outsourcing seems to be the buzz-word of the new millenium, a word no doubt conjured up by a group of ill-fated and unintelligent “managers” one frosty Monday morning after being given the routine shake-up by the annoyed CEO. What is it? Well it means contracting out various functions of the business in order to cut costs and compete on price and percieved value with competitors. It usually happens in an industry...

Testing Times...

The time has arrived, and since passed. My first exam, and for many in the University, has passed off peacefully with only minor regrets. While it was an occassion to be proud of, it too was a test of time. Had I enough time spent studying? Was all the times I spent watching CNBC and reading the Sunday Business Post been in vain? Did I spend 19 years in education wisely?? These, my friend, are some of the questions that...
